For more than three decades, Carla Cope has been a steady and dedicated presence at Wilberforce University, serving the institution with a spirit of excellence, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to its mission. From her first day on campus in 1993 to her return in the summer of 2026 as a consultant, Cope’s journey reflects a deep passion for helping Wilberforce thrive and ensuring future generations of students can succeed.

Before coming to Wilberforce, Cope spent 17 years building a successful career in retail management. Having served as a department manager, assistant store manager, assistant buyer, and store display coordinator for major retail organizations, she was ready for a new challenge when an opportunity opened in the University’s bookstore.

“I saw the opportunity to work for a university bookstore, and I am glad I did,” Cope said. “I like working for the university because it’s a place where we can assist young people to become successful in life.”

That simple but powerful belief became the foundation of a remarkable 32-year career.

Cope began her Wilberforce journey as a bookstore cashier in 1993. Her leadership abilities quickly became evident, and in 1997 she was promoted to bookstore manager following the retirement of her predecessor. In that role, she served students, faculty, and staff while helping the bookstore remain a vital part of campus life.

When the university bookstore closed in 2009 as students increasingly transitioned to purchasing books online, Cope once again demonstrated her flexibility and dedication. Rather than leaving the institution she had come to love, she accepted a new opportunity as Administrative Assistant and Gift Recorder in the Office of Development. There, she became an integral part of the University’s fundraising and donor stewardship efforts, helping maintain records and support initiatives that advanced Wilberforce’s mission.

Her work behind the scenes has played an important role in helping the University cultivate relationships with alumni, donors, and supporters whose generosity contributes to student success and institutional growth.

This commitment to Wilberforce led Cope back to campus once again in the summer of 2026. Returning as a Donor Database Specialist consultant, she answered the call to help the University continue meeting its fundraising goals during a period of growth and transformation.

“Everywhere I turned, people were telling me about Carla Cope and the tremendous impact she had on the Office of Institutional Advancement,” says Dr. Grant L. Winrow, vice president of the Office of Institutional Advancement.  “Her reputation for excellence and institutional knowledge preceded her. I reached out to her to see if she would be willing to consult with us and assist in training our new database employees. During our conversations, it became clear that Wilberforce needed Carla just as much as she had once needed Wilberforce. I’m pleased that I was able to convince her to return, and our office is stronger because of it.”

Throughout her career, Cope has embraced every opportunity to serve beyond her official job responsibilities. She fondly recalls meeting notable individuals including music legend Ray Charles, actress Phylicia Rashad, and entertainer LL Cool J through University events and activities. She also enjoyed traveling with alumni to conferences and building meaningful relationships with graduates who remain committed to Wilberforce’s legacy.

Some of her most cherished memories, however, are rooted in the everyday moments that make a university community special. Whether helping design flower beds across campus, creating beautiful table settings for special events, organizing floral arrangements, or assisting with event setup, Cope has always found ways to contribute to the Wilberforce experience.

“I have enjoyed my time at Wilberforce,” she says with characteristic humility.

Outside of work, Cope enjoys gardening, knitting, and spending time outdoors. Those hobbies reflect the same patience, care, and dedication that has defined her professional life.

As Wilberforce University continues to move forward, Carla Cope’s story serves as a reminder that institutions are strengthened by people whose commitment extends far beyond a job title. Her willingness to evolve, serve where needed, and invest in the University’s success exemplifies the Wilberforce spirit.

For 32 years and counting, Carla Cope has helped cultivate not only donor relationships and university operations, but also a culture of dedication and service. Her return in 2026 underscores what many throughout the Wilberforce community already know: when experience, passion, and purpose come together, the impact can last for generations.

Thank you, Carla Cope, for your faithful service, continued support, and enduring commitment to Wilberforce University.
