At Wilberforce University, history is not just remembered; it is actively lived, renewed, and strengthened through acts of faith and commitment. That truth was on full display once again during this year’s commencement, as the African Methodist Episcopal Church reaffirmed its enduring partnership with the University it helped bring into existence.
The story begins at the 2025 Commencement ceremony, when Bishop Stafford J. N. Wicker stood before graduates, families, and the Wilberforce community to announce a transformative $100,000 pledge on behalf of the AME Church. That moment was more than ceremonial; it was deeply symbolic, representing a continued investment in an institution rooted in faith, resilience, and Black excellence.
What followed was even more powerful. That initial pledge served as a catalyst; sparking additional generosity and resulting in an additional $25,000 raised during the 2025 commencement ceremony, bringing the total raised at that time to $125,000. The original $100,000 pledge was fully met, demonstrating not only inspiration, but action.
Building on that momentum, the AME Church extended its commitment with an additional $100,000 pledge for Fiscal Year 2026, which has also now been fulfilled. In total, these efforts represent $225,000 in new funds raised in direct support of Wilberforce University. Importantly, these funds are in addition to the AME Church’s ongoing financial support of the University throughout the year, further underscoring the depth of this historic partnership.
During this year’s commencement, the AME Church returned to Wilberforce not just in presence, but in purpose, demonstrating integrity through fulfilled commitments and a continued investment in future generations of students.
Leading this year’s giving ceremony was a distinguished group of AME bishops whose leadership continues to shape both the Church and the University: Bishop Stafford J. N. Wicker, Bishop Michael Mitchell, Bishop Silvester Beaman, and Bishop Wilfred Messiah. Together, they stood as both spiritual leaders and stewards of a legacy that spans generations.
In recognition of their unwavering dedication and service to Wilberforce University, each bishop was honored during the ceremony. This recognition served as a tribute not only to their individual contributions, but to the collective commitment of the AME Church to sustain and uplift the institution.
The bond between Wilberforce University and the AME Church is unlike any other in higher education. Founded through the vision and support of the Church, Wilberforce remains a living testament to what can be achieved when faith and education intersect. This latest act of giving is not simply about dollars; it is about destiny. It is about ensuring that Wilberforce continues to stand as a beacon of opportunity for generations to come.
As the University looks ahead, this moment serves as a powerful reminder: legacy is not inherited; it is upheld, strengthened, and multiplied through action. Through the continued partnership of the AME Church, that legacy remains strong, steadfast, and full of promise.
