Dr. Lindsey Light Brings Creativity, Connection, and Leadership to the Wilberforce Classroom

Wilberforce University continues to enrich its academic community with passionate educators like Dr. Lindsey Light, Assistant Professor of English, whose dynamic teaching style and commitment to student engagement are making a meaningful impact in and beyond the classroom.

With more than 15 years of teaching experience, Dr. Light brings both expertise and enthusiasm to her courses in Composition and Arts and Humanities. She holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership, a master’s degree in English, and a bachelor’s degree in English—an academic foundation that supports her innovative and student-centered approach to teaching.

In her classroom, Dr. Light blends traditional literary study with pop culture and multimedia, creating an engaging environment where students can explore complex themes such as the depiction of family, as well as the meaning of jobs, careers, and vocations in today’s world. Her approach not only strengthens students’ writing and critical thinking skills but also makes learning relevant and accessible.

“I enjoy connecting with students and finding creative ways to explore meaningful topics,” she said. “Incorporating elements of pop culture allows students to engage with course material in a way that feels both familiar and impactful.”

Dr. Light joined Wilberforce University for the 2025–2026 academic year, drawn by its historic legacy as the first private Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the nation. Since arriving on campus, she has embraced the opportunity to expand her teaching methods and contribute to a supportive academic environment.

“The students, faculty, and staff have been incredibly welcoming,” she shared. “Wilberforce has given me the opportunity to teach new courses and continue growing as an educator.”

Her academic interests include English, Educational Leadership with a focus on Higher Education Administration, and Academic Motherhood—an area she explored in her doctoral research. These interests inform her holistic approach to education, where student development extends beyond academics.

Outside of the classroom, Dr. Light is a devoted mother of two and enjoys spending time supporting her children’s activities, reading, and watching television and films—interests that often inspire her teaching.

Dr. Light encourages students to fully embrace their educational journey at Wilberforce.

“Take responsibility for your education and get as much as possible out of your time here,” she advised. “Make meaningful connections with your professors and peers—those relationships will shape your experience and your future.”

Through her dedication, creativity, and passion for student success, Dr. Lindsey Light exemplifies the spirit of excellence that defines Wilberforce University.
