Job Summary

Wilberforce University seeks a Sr. Database Administrator to join our team. The successful candidate will work closely with the Network Administrator to assist with managing the university’s network.  We are looking for a skilled Sr. Database Administrator who is responsible for the development and implementation of the Oracle/SQL Server life cycles as they relate to application needs, working directly with peers, and vendors to create database strategies that support the application and operational needs of the university. In addition, this role also acts as a DBA architect responsible for designing database environments for applications including partnering with application vendors and their technology staff to ensure the database environment meets regulatory policies and requirements while supporting application requirements.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs database system management functions (e.g., software installs, version upgrades, integrations, and configuration management, security) and ensure license agreement compliance
  • Designs, implements, manages complex database environments, installation upgrades, and maintenance of enterprise database software including Oracle and MS SQL Server
  • Define database objects and relationships as indicated based on requirements of the application
  • Manage and support third party integration software to enhance processing of current and future ERP, SIS, and CRM systems, as directed
  • Assist in the overall planning for the future direction of database software in support of the University’s mission and goals by monitoring and maintaining production and non-production database environments and implementing business rules via stored procedures, middleware, or other technology
  • Implements data models, database structure design, database documentation, backup, recovery processes, troubleshooting, and problem resolution
  • Perform assessments and identify, test, and resolve moderately complex database performance issues (e.g., monitoring, and tuning)
  • Performs code and index reviews
  • Designs and implements technologies such as Canvas, Banner, Anthology, Slate, Axiom, Argos, and more
  • Performs moderately complex modification, testing, and debugging tasks on vendor supplied utilities and packages to ensure fit with current operating environment
  • Leads in the escalation of issues with appropriate internal resources
  • Leads the development and maintenance of system documentation
  • Performs all technical support of assigned applications
  • Reviews and edits system documentation developed within the department to ensure that all software products are efficient and meet all regulatory and security requirements
  • Utilizes and maintains appropriate change control procedures and standards
  • 24-hour production problem support
  • Daily verification of database backups, review and resolution of log and monitoring messages
  • When provided access to personal, proprietary and/or otherwise confidential data, maintains such data in the strictest confidence and follows procedures to ensure the privacy, security, and proper use of data

Minimum Qualifications

Database Administrator Qualifications/Skills:

  •  10 or more years of Oracle database administration and Microsoft SQL programming experience is required
  • 10 or more years of significant system administration experience in a Unix or Linux environment is required; Solaris, Unix Shell Scripts, and PEARL scripting preferred
  • 5 or more years of Canvas, Banner, Anthology, Slate, Axiom, and Argos experience is required
  • Demonstrated experience managing Oracle RDBMS, Oracle Forms, Oracle Internet Application Server, PLSQL; Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) is required
  • Familiarity with cloud hosting, including AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle cloud
  • Previous experience operationally supporting production systems.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology and/or Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • Five (5) years of related IT experience demonstrating a progression of dealing with increasingly complex systems including one (1) year of experience running mission critical systems
  • Must be aware of current technologies, and industry best practices for their areas of responsibility
  • Previous years of experience with tuning database queries to improve performance
  • 1 or more years of working as a Primary Database Administrator
  • Previous years of experience working in higher education
