Earlier this week, Wilberforce University, the nation’s first, private historically Black college/university (HBCU), and the Cincinnati Reds, the nation’s first professional baseball team, announced a partnership that will not only bring a baseball team back to the university, but has the potential to create opportunities for students within the Reds organization.
University archives indicate that baseball was introduced to the WU men’s team in 1911, but was discontinued just before 1947. That leaves a multi decade space in the game’s history at WU. But that will correct itself in the fall of 2022, when the game returns, thanks to the agreement created by the Reds non profit Community Fund.
