In a bold move aligning with a national push toward more affordable and efficient college pathways, Wilberforce University offers an accelerated three-year Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, one of the first of its kind among historically Black universities.
With many U.S. colleges exploring options that let student’s complete bachelor’s degrees in three years, reducing tuition costs, living expenses, and overall debt, Wilberforce’s fast-track Kinesiology degree places it at the forefront of this evolving trend in higher education.
The three-year Kinesiology program is designed for students pursuing careers in health, fitness, physical therapy, sports science, and wellness, providing a more streamlined, career-focused curriculum without sacrificing quality. Accelerated degrees like this can allow students to enter the workforce sooner and reduce the total cost of earning a degree, outcomes that are driving interest in thirty-month bachelor programs nationwide.
“As workforce needs evolve and students seek both affordability and career readiness, programs like our 3-year Kinesiology degree represent a new era of academic innovation,” said Wilberforce Provost Lynda Brown-Wright, Ph.D. “This offers students intentional curriculum design that prepares them for meaningful work in health and wellness faster.”
Entering its second year the program, which currently has about 30 students enrolled, is one of several new academic offerings approved by the Higher Learning Commission, alongside Civil and Environmental Engineering programs.
These additions come at a pivotal time: Wilberforce has seen strengthening enrollment trends and institutional investment, including nearly doubling its student population in recent years, major campus infrastructure projects, and expanded academic and athletic facilities.
Three-year degrees continue to appeal to students and families looking to control rising higher education costs. Nationally, organizations promoting three-year bachelor’s pathways highlight benefits such as saving up to a full year of tuition and living expenses, accelerating career entry, and engaging in focused, competency-based curricula.
Wilberforce’s format still ensures a comprehensive academic experience, but in a condensed timeframe that supports students who are ready to commit to an accelerated plan.
Students in the Kinesiology program will benefit from coursework tailored to the science of human movement, exercise, and health, learning skills applicable not only in clinical pathways like physical therapy but also in community health, coaching, and wellness industries. (Course descriptions typically include anatomy, movement science, nutrition, and health promotion.)
Wilberforce’s move reflects a broader institutional vision, one that centers innovation, affordability, and relevance in a competitive higher education era. With its long legacy as the nation’s oldest private HBCU, the university’s investment in accelerated academic pathways underscores a commitment to student success and workforce preparation.
Students can begin enrolling in the three-year Kinesiology program this fall, taking advantage of a fast-paced degree that blends academic rigor with real-world readiness. For more information, visit Wilberforce.edu/ or scan the QR Code below.
