Wilberforce University is proud to announce the successful closing of a major new property at 902 North Bickett Road, marking another significant step forward in the University’s continued growth and long-term expansion strategy.
Located just two doors down from the University gym and directly across the street from the new residence halls, this strategically positioned property represents a powerful investment in Wilberforce’s future. The property carries an appraised value of $623,000 and has been paid in full, making it a major unencumbered asset for the University—one that is expected to continue appreciating value over time.
The site includes a 2,800-square-foot residential home with four bedrooms, as well as a 48,000-square-foot commercial building that features a 600-square-foot apartment and a 500-square-foot office space at the front of the building. In the coming days, University staff will conduct a thorough assessment of both structures to determine the steps necessary to bring them online as quickly and effectively as possible.
“This acquisition is a milestone moment for Wilberforce University,” said President Newkirk. “Expanding our physical footprint directly supports our enrollment strategy and strengthens our ability to recruit and retain students. Properties like this are essential as we work toward our goal of reaching 1,000 students by Fall 2026 while also enhancing academic, athletic, and residential life on campus.”
In the near term, the property has the capacity to house up to 16 students, generating approximately $144,000 annually, and serving as a key component of Wilberforce’s plans to grow enrollment to 1,000 students and beyond. Looking ahead, the University envisions the space supporting engineering and aviation programs, classrooms, and athletic initiatives such as gymnastics and wrestling, reinforcing Wilberforce’s commitment to academic excellence and student opportunity.
This announcement comes alongside an important update on current housing expansion efforts. While weather-related delays temporarily slowed progress earlier this winter, work is moving forward with renewed momentum. Building One has completed all electrical and plumbing installations, and interior finishing work is now underway. Construction continues on Buildings Two and Three, with walls expected to be up on Building Two by mid-March.
Each of these developments reflects Wilberforce University’s unwavering commitment to growth, innovation, and student success. With strategic investments, expanding infrastructure, and a clear vision for the future, Wilberforce is not just growing—it is building the foundation for a stronger, more vibrant University poised to meet its ambitious enrollment goals and serve generations to come.
